Summary: In the beginning there was rumour. 'Rumours of a land which harvests gold' was how the introductory voice-over in the Malayalam film Vilkkanundu Swapnangal [Dreams for sale] (Azad, 1980) called it. The rumoured land was 'Dubai.' The film showed its audience the less than desirable conditions of labour and life in the Gulf. But it also conjured the fabled riches of the Gulf too, and the undreamt of rise it can bestow on those who are willing to take their chances. The film showed the Dubai dream.
